Skin tags are generally small growths that appear on the surface of the skin and are unsightly and unnecessary. While they may seem bothersome they tend to be harmless and benign, prompting many patients to have them removed for cosmetic purposes.
Commonly, skin tags can develop anywhere on the body, predominantly on the neck , underarms, inner thighs being the most typical locations. On the rare instance a skin tag can grow quite large in which case it’s best to seek removal if it becomes bothersome.
It is safe to say skin tags are usually harmless, and there are no known cases of where they have become precancerous. However, if the skin tag displays significant noticeable changes, unusual change in its colour or begins to bleed, it is advisable to obtain a skin biopsy to eliminate the possibilities of skin cancer as the cause of the unusual change.
In the case where removal is desired or warranted it is usually painless & effective, in which a dermatologist may use a variety of methods such as cauterization, cryotherapy ,surgery and laser to eradicate the skin tags.
