August Newsletter 2020

Imagine that you’re on your way to a very important meeting. You’ve spent all day getting your things together and you’re feeling good about your day. You’ve dressed up quite well, in your best formals. You’re on your way to the client – about ten minutes away when you realise that you’ve left your laptop behind and you won’t be able to reach in time for your presentation. Almost immediately, a feeling of dread washes over you, your palms feel clammy and your heart is beating so loud you’re worried it might burst. You break into a cold sweat, a thin line of sweat forming on your upper lip and another bead of sweat trickling down your temples, in spite of the air conditioning being on full blast.

When you finally reach the office – you’re back in control and have managed to calm down but you’re cringing from the sweat patches on your clothes. You’ve finished half a box of tissues drying your wet palms before it’s time to shake every hand in the room. Has this ever happened to you? It may have possibly happened – sweat has terrible timing and a very poor sense of humour. This is one of the hundred horror stories we hear on a regular basis – effects of livid in a hot and humid city. Excessive sweating is the most relatable problems while living in Dubai. This could happen anywhere – on a date, during a meeting, or while having a night out dancing.

Our bodies contain anywhere from two to five million sweat glands, which are denser in the underarms, palms, soles of our feet, and face. When we overheat or get anxious, our nervous system responds by activating our sweat glands, and they begin to secrete water to cool us down.

Generally, the most easiest and straightforward way to keep a lock on the sweat is by using an antiperspirant – chemical or natural. This works well for sweaty pits and palms. But there’s a caveat – Antiperspirants may trigger contact dermatitis when applied for long periods of time, making it cracked, sore and excessively dry. There’s also the inconvenience of having to reapply it throughout the day.

Then there are interventions like miraDry and Iontophoresis – all of which have pros and cons that make it less convincing as a treatment choice. The miraDry is painful and has a long recovery time. Iontophoresis has to be done in multiple sessions on a regular interval to maintain the results. You also have the option of taking oral medication for excessive sweating – but at the cost of side effects like dry mouth and blurry vision.

Then we get down to the final and the Biolite – Approved ™ option of them all – Botox! Botox has the ability to significantly reduce sweat production for up to a period of 4-5 months. Don’t get us wrong – Sweating is an essential and totally normal bodily function that keeps us from overheating. But seeking Botox injections in one area of your body DOES NOT affect other body parts – you will still sweat the same amount everywhere else.

Botox injections can be done on the scalp, underarms, face, palms and soles, though we’re wary of the soles being injected – they can get quite sore for up to a week. The session takes up to 40 minutes for each body part. It takes about SEVEN Days for the full effects to kick in. You may have a little bruising and temporary soreness that subside gradually. For 24 hours after the treatment, you’re discouraged from using perfumes or deodorants on the area.

But does getting Botox injections mean that you can chuck your can of deodorant forever?

Here’s the issue with Body Odour (BO). If you’re using Botox, you still have to use deodorant because BO has a different root cause entirely. However, the smell may definitely reduce post treatment.

The treatment has often been described as “liberating” – probably because sweating can trigger social anxiety and a feeling of embarrassment. It’s the perfect month to get the treatment done before the August heat fully kicks in!
