Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks are an ideal surgery to tighten the abdominal skin, firm and flatten the torso, and slim the waist. Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tucks are one of the most widely known plastic surgeries today, and for good reason – the stomach is arguably the area of the body that gives people the most insecurities. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, tummy tucks are among the top five plastic surgery procedures performed annually in the United States. The procedure's incredible popularity extends worldwide.

Tummy tucks can be done alone but are often combined with other cosmetic procedures that change the shape of the body holistically. Contact Biolite Aesthetic Clinic to schedule a consultation and receive a personalized body-transforming treatment plan.

How Does a Tummy Tuck Work?

Pregnancy, weight loss and age-related loss of elasticity in the tummy area can all lead to a body that leaves us feeling self-conscious and embarrassed. A plastic surgeon can use the tummy tuck technique to remove unwanted fat and skin in the abdomen and restore weak and separated muscles, creating a smoother and firmer stomach.

Tummy tucks are performed by a plastic surgeon who makes a horizontal incision in the area between the pubic bone and belly button. From there, the abdominal skin is lifted so that the underlying muscles can be repaired and tightened. At this point, unwanted skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is smoothed back into place.

Excess skin in the upper abdomen may be removed through a second incision around the belly button. If this is necessary to achieve the best result, the belly button is moved into a more aesthetically pleasing position and sutured into place.

Why Do We Need Tummy Tucks?

Diet and exercise work to lose weight, but they can rarely tighten or eliminate the excess skin left behind – especially in the abdominal area. Surgery is the most efficient way to get rid of excess skin and tighten loose tissue. It's also the only way to repair separated abdominal muscles.

As we age, it becomes even harder to achieve a fit and healthy body, which leaves many of us feeling hopeless about the way we look. In combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise, a tummy tuck can restore your physique as well as your confidence.

How Should I Prepare for My Tummy Tuck Surgery?

We recommend that every patient does as much research as they can into abdominoplasty to decide if it fits their goals and lifestyle. It’s important to read other patients' stories and look at as many before and after photos as possible. This gives you an idea of the results you can expect, as well as what the experience of surgery and recovery is like.

A tummy tuck is an invasive surgery, so it’s essential that you feel comfortable with your decision to proceed. We ask patients to make a list of questions and concerns to bring to their initial consultation at Biolite Aesthetic Clinic.

During your consultation at our Dubai office, one of our surgeons will thoroughly review your medical history and discuss your aesthetic goals. They will also conduct a physical examination and address any concerns and questions you raise. Afterward, your surgeon will use this information to create a specific treatment plan that is customized for you.

After your tummy tuck consultation, you will be given a list of instructions to follow leading up to your surgery. It’s critical to follow these instructions closely as they directly affect your health, safety and results.

What Happens During a Tummy Tuck?

The following is a simplified breakdown of the general steps during a tummy tuck:

  • Patient checks in to our clinic and meets with the surgeon
  • Surgeon reviews the plans for the procedure
  • Patient is taken into the surgical room and prepared
  • Patient receives general anesthesia to be put under during the procedure
  • Surgeon makes a horizontal incision in the low abdomen and possibly one around the navel
  • Surgeon removes excess fat and skin and tightens the remaining tissues; surgeon tightens the abdominal muscles if necessary
  • Surgeon sutures the incisions closed

At the conclusion of the procedure, the abdominal area is covered with bandages, and small drainage tubes may be placed along the incision to remove any excess fluid. Tummy tuck surgery lasts between two and three hours.

What Can Be Expected During Tummy Tuck Recovery?

You can expect the following during the tummy tuck recovery process:

Timeline Activities Side Effects Precautions
Week Immediately After Surgery Bedrest and no showering. Keep the area drained and clean of any fluids Pain and swelling of the area are normal. Your surgeon may prescribe blood-thinning medication and pain relievers A supportive abdominal garment, also known as an abdominal binder or compression garment, is worn. Avoid bending over or positions that put pressure on the incision line. Be careful when moving around
Weeks Two to Six Be careful when moving and do light activities only. Showering may be resumed once the drains are removed after the first week Lessening pain and swelling Compression garment is worn up until six weeks. Avoid positions that strain the incision line to prevent the reopening of the wound. Avoid any lifting and vigorous exercise
Weeks Six+ A follow-up visit with your surgeon will take place. They will advise you on any continued aftercare and clear you to resume normal activities None None

What Results Can Be Expected From a Tummy Tuck?

The final results of tummy tuck surgery may not be initially noticeable due to swelling and activity restrictions. Final results can be seen in six to eight weeks when the swelling has subsided and you feel comfortable moving, sleeping, working and engaging in your favorite activities.

The tummy tuck incision is located below the pubic line, so it’s not easily visible. The scar may take up to a year to fade as much as possible. Make sure to care for it as your surgeon instructs and avoid strain on the area as you recover. These steps ensure the scar is as unobtrusive as possible.

Can I Combine My Tummy Tuck With Other Procedures?

Abdominoplasty can be combined with other cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction, breast augmentation and body lifts. Tummy tucks are also popularly done as part of a Mommy Makeover. It can be highly beneficial to combine any procedures you're interested in, as this can make surgery more affordable and save you time in recovery.

Let your surgeons know if you are interested in more than one surgery to transform your body from head to toe.
