Are You Wondering How To Treat Alopecia Areata?

Everything you need to know about alopecia areata

What is alopecia areata?

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune skin disease that causes hair to fall out in small patches and usually affects the scalp, but can occur on any hair-bearing part of the skin. Alopecia areata develops when the immune system attacks the hair follicles. The affected hair follicles become very small, slow down hair production, and grow no hair visible above the surface for months or even years.  It can affect anyone, regardless of age and gender and approximately 6.8 million people in the United States and 147 million worldwide have or will develop alopecia areata at some point in their lives. Risk factors include a family history of the disease or an autoimmune disease.

What are the different types of alopecia areata?

Three of the most common types of alopecia areata are:

  • Alopecia areata patchy: This is the most common form of alopecia areata. When affected with this condition, a person develops coin-sized hairless patches on the scalp or other areas of the body.
  • Alopecia areata totalis: Alopecia totalis causes total loss of the hair on the scalp.
  • Alopecia areata universalis: This condition causes a complete loss of hair on the scalp, face, and body.

What are the treatment options for alopecia areata?

Currently, there is no cure for alopecia areata, however there are multiple treatment options available in the market which can help you slow down future hair loss or help your hair grow back more quickly.

  • Provita hair loss treatment

The key ingredients of this treatment are vitamins, protein extract, and stem cells. This unique composition of active ingredients makes this treatment highly beneficial, as it boosts the metabolic process in the scalp and nourishes it to promote hair growth. Biolite’s Provita hair loss treatment includes three types of therapies to treat alopecia areata:

  • Acell

Acell is a naturally occurring matrix of proteins found in tissue layers. Its main function is to stimulate adult stem cells in the damaged tissues. When injected into the scalp, it regenerates dormant follicular tissues, thereby promoting hair growth. Provita hair loss treatment in combination with Acell is a great non-surgical method to treat alopecia areata.

  • Stem cell-derived growth factors

According to a 2019 review, stem cells are highly effective in the regeneration of hair follicles and improving hair regrowth. Stem cells are characterized by their capacity for self‐renewal and ability to differentiate into various cell lineages. Hair follicle stem cells can give rise to all the cells of a hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and interfollicular epidermis. The use of hair follicle stem cells is a promising treatment for alopecia areata as it is helpful in the suppression of autoimmune destruction and recovery of immune balance in alopecia areata patients. Transplantation of stem cells also helps in the production of new hair follicles.

  • Biotin

A deficiency of Biotin can lead to severe hair fall in some patients. Keratin, a basic protein that makes up your hair, needs biotin to be produced. Biotin is beneficial in treating alopecia areata because it improves your body’s keratin infrastructure. This leads to the regeneration of hair follicles and stronger and healthier hair.

  • Micro-needling

Micro-needling involves the use of a skin roller with small needles that causes minor skin injuries to regenerate the health of hair follicles. It can thicken the hair and even lead to new hair growth. It is an effective treatment for alopecia areata as it helps induce the growth of stem cells in hair follicles. It also increases blood flow to the hair follicles. At our hair loss clinic, we employ a fractional needling device with a vibrating motion. Our treatment provides incredible results with minimum epidermal damage and you will also experience less pain and discomfort than traditional methods.

  • Low-level laser therapy

Low-level laser therapy is also known as red light therapy or cold laser therapy. The main function of this procedure is to irradiate photons into scalp tissues. These photons are absorbed by the weak cells to promote hair growth.  According to a 2014 study, low-level laser therapy appeared to be a safe and effective method for hair growth in both men and women. Additionally, this method is non-invasive and pain-free. Low-level laser therapy is a brilliant treatment option for alopecia areata as it invigorates circulation and stimulates hair growth.
