Surgical Procedure

If you are looking to improve the harmony of your facial appearance by adjusting the structure of your nose, then rhinoplasty is one of the best and most reliable options to consider. A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to achieve a more balanced appearance.

Every year, tens of thousands of rhinoplasties are performed on patients who were tired of feeling self-conscious about their facial appearance. In 2020 alone, more than 55,000 rhinoplasties were performed, according to a recent report from The Aesthetic Society.

What Does Rhinoplasty Treat?

Depending on your genetics or trauma, there may be many different components of the nose that you are looking to address:

Oftentimes, an otherwise aesthetically pleasing nose will feature nostrils that are too wide or narrow for the rest of its shape.

Nasal Tip

A nasal tip that points too far up or down can over or underexpose your nostrils, creating a less-than-ideal nose shape from the front and side profiles. It can also become bulbous or enlarged, a feature that is often caricatured and therefore a serious aesthetic concern for many people.

This is the flat part of your nose that runs from between your eyes to just above the tip between your nostrils. This part of the nose has a tremendous impact on your side profile, causing some people to have an overly large or depressed hump. This section also has a lot to do with how large your nose appears in relation to the rest of your face in terms of size and symmetry.

Am I a Candidate for a Rhinoplasty?

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose and have a healthy outlook and motivation to undergo a rhinoplasty, then you are likely a strong candidate for this confidence-building procedure.

It is important that the rest of your face is done growing before you decide to have a rhinoplasty since it is possible that you will grow into your nasal structure.

Other than that, if you are physically healthy, live an active lifestyle and do not smoke or excessively drink, then you should schedule an appointment with our office to confirm that you are a candidate for a rhinoplasty.

Why Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?

  • More predictive results can be achieved with bone reshaping, which can be measured in millimeters
  • It prevents unwanted fractures with the chisel and hammer method (old technique using osteotomes)
  • No soft tissue trauma (skin, cartilage) resulting in less bruising and swelling
  • No injury to blood vessels, with faster healing
  • It reduces the complications and unwanted fractures seen after rhinoplasty

How Should I Prepare for Rhinoplasty?

Your procedure may require you to make some adjustments to your medications or supplements since they can sometimes cause you to be at a higher risk for surgical complications. You should stop smoking immediately, especially if you expect to have a procedure performed in the near future.

You will be given a set of preoperative instructions to follow that will include these instructions and other details that are specific to your unique case. Following these guidelines as closely as possible will give you the highest chances of having a successful surgery and ideal results.

You will need to have someone with you on the morning of your surgery to drive you since you will not be able to operate machinery after your surgery. It is also helpful if that person is available for the first day or two of your recovery so you can minimize the strain on your body.

It is also a good idea to set up a recovery station wherever you will be spending the majority of your downtime. Medications, drinks, snacks, electronics, chargers, books — anything you need to be comfortable should be within arms reach, especially in the early stages of your recovery.

What Should I Expect from a Rhinoplasty Procedure?

Your procedure will always begin with the administration of anesthesia. This step is to make sure that you are as comfortable and safe as possible during the rhinoplasty. Your options include IV sedation or general anesthesia, but the one you will use will be determined by you and your surgeon ahead of time.

Once the anesthesia has kicked in, the surgical site will be cleaned with a sterile solution, and your surgeon will begin to make the incisions on your nose. These incisions will be made according to whether an open or closed approach is used.

An open approach uses incisions across the columella, the fleshy bit of tissue between the nostrils. This method offers the greatest amount of access to the inner structure of the nasal area.

If only minor adjustments are needed to your nasal structure, then a closed approach will likely be performed. In this method, the incisions are made inside your nose.

Once the incisions are made, your surgeons will add or remove tissue or structures as necessary to achieve the look you desire. Cartilage is often borrowed from other places on the body, like the ear or rib cage, to fill in gaps.

Once the structure has been altered, the incisions are then closed. Your nostrils will be lined with a splint, stuffed with gauze and covered in bandages to prevent shifting during the healing process, and you are then sent out to begin your recovery.

What Should I Expect During Rhinoplasty Recovery?

When you first wake up from the anesthesia, you can expect to experience minor pain, discomfort and swelling. This is a completely normal part of the recovery process. There will be a lot of pressure from both the surgery and the accompanying bandages and gauze. Luckily, pain and discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter or prescription medications.

The splint will be in place for about five days to keep the nose lined up properly. By the 10-day mark, you can generally expect to return to most of your usual activities, although some more intensive routines may need more time to get cleared.

You should avoid any activity that can cause trauma to your nose since it hasn’t had a chance to fully settle. Six weeks is usually how long it takes for a nose to become as rigid and sturdy as usual, but you should always wait until your physician clears you.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from a Rhinoplasty?

Your rhinoplasty results are permanent. This means as long as you do not experience any trauma to the nose, you will be able to enjoy improved facial contouring for the rest of your life. Rhinoplasties are one of the most difficult cosmetic surgeries to predict the finals results, so doing your best to protect your nose while it is setting will help an already complicated procedure.
