Pressotherapy: A clinical treatment you must try!

A solution to chronic stiffness—plus it can help you achieve a toned body

If you have been struggling with fatigue and cramped muscles and feel like your body is unable to get rid of toxins, then you may find a solution in pressotherapy. It is a massage that offers pain relief and instant relaxation without any side effects. Like most massages, it is non-invasive in nature, but unlike most massages, it makes use of air compression to exert pressure. To understand pressotherapy, one first needs to understand our body’s lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that carry oxygen, white blood cells, and nutrients to various body parts. It also collects and flushes out cellular debris. Pressotherapy activates the lymphatic system, which helps increase blood circulation, speeds up the process of detoxification, and strengthens the immune system.

How does pressotherapy work?

Pressotherapy can be defined as a lymphatic drainage massage. It is performed with the help of a bodysuit-like machine that pumps calculated pressure to your body. The air-filled body suit inflates and deflates rhythmically and massages lymph nodes. The pressure is usually focussed on the legs, abdomen, feet, and ankles. It is commonly done in spas and wellness centres by trained professionals.Critical appraisals have shown that “compression therapy-associated adverse events are very rarely encountered”, so pressotherapy is classified as a broadly safe procedure.Initially, this method was invented to treat lymphoedema, a condition in which tissues swell up because of lymphatic obstruction. In recent years, however, people have started using the treatment for weight and inch loss as it melts cellulite and burns fat.A session of pressotherapy can last anywhere between 30 minutes to 50 minutes. The frequency and duration of the sessions depend on a case by case basis. Since it stimulates the movement of water in the body, some people feel the need to urinate immediately after the treatment.

What are the benefits of pressotherapy?

Pressotherapy helps in the reduction of swelling, tones the skin, and removes stiffness. People with prolonged body pain have reported getting fewer aches after just one session. It expedites the removal of biochemical wastes from body tissues and makes the immune system stronger. The treatment has also seen a huge success in losing weight and inches. Lymphatic drainage removes body toxins at a faster rate, which is why pressotherapy is also used as a slimming aid. To see quicker results, combine the treatment with a healthy diet and regular exercise.People are increasingly combining pressotherapy with different weight reduction treatments. This treatment needs no downtime or elaborate preparations. It is great for those who do not have much time and need instant results without any side effects.

Precautions and aftercare

Do not eat a large meal a few hours before the treatment as it might make you uncomfortable when the air pressure is focussed on your abdomen area. It is desirable to have an empty bladder before the session. You should also do some simple stretching exercises to mitigate any cases of muscle contraction. After the treatment, keep yourself hydrated and avoid eating processed carbohydrates. Stick to light and healthy meals for a few days. Even though there are no serious side effects to the treatment, some people with skin sensitivity may experience temporary irritation.

Who is the best candidate for pressotherapy?

Pressotherapy is suitable for most people who are above 18 years. However, as a rule of thumb, doctors do not recommend it to heart patients and pregnant women. If you have dislocated a joint or suffered a fracture, then you should not undertake this treatment as it involves friction that might harm your recently recovered bones or joints.People with osteoporosis and deep vein thrombosis should not go for this treatment. If you have been taking fever medicines or anticoagulants, then you should consult your doctor before undergoing pressotherapy. To learn more about Biolite, you can speak to us on  +971 4 346 6641, email on, or schedule an appointment here.FEATURED IMAGE COURTESY: Master1305 @Freepik
