How To Treat Body Acne

At-home and in-clinic solutions for getting rid of body acne, once and for all

Body acne is a common issue plaguing most people who suffer from the all-consuming and persistent dermatological problem of facial acne. While the two are not mutually related, they do share multiple similarities. Much like your face, a combination of oil and grime can typically cause breakouts anywhere on your body, most commonly on the back, chest, and upper arms. The cause of body acne can be attributed to the overdriven sebaceous (oil) glands on the skin of the body leading to clogged pores due to build-up of excess sebum. One major factor that causes pores to become clogged is lack of exfoliation. Without periodic sloughing off of the dead-skin cells, the skin follicles become susceptible to clogging. On the body, acne is also caused due to what is known as folliculitis or inflammation of the hair follicles. The process of getting rid of body acne is similar to facial acne and can seem challenging. However, depending on its severity, proper care and treatment ensures it is minimised and prevented. Here are some ways you can get rid of body acne at-home and in-clinic.

AT HOME

  • Choose the correct acne-medicated body wash

Look for certain ingredients such as glycolic acid (an AHA that dissolves the upper layer of dead skin cells to prevent spots), lactic acid (a gentler AHA which also prevents spots and smooths skin), and salicylic acid (a BHA that exfoliates the skin’s outermost layer and unblocks clogged pores of sebum). These ingredients help exfoliate your body and in the process unclog the pores that contain the acne-causing bacteria.

  • Don’t skip moisturiser

Contrary to belief, moisturiser does not contribute to acne, rather helps minimise it. The key is choosing the correct type of moisturiser. Avoid layering on thick creams and stick to recommended ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, retinoid etc. These ingredients help control the acne-causing bacteria and act in conjunction to the moisturiser that helps soothe and repair the skin barrier post scrubbing and exfoliation.

  1. Use a topical cream

As tempting as it is to pick or itch zits, this actually leads to infection and scarring and should be avoided at all costs. To calm and soothe the skin, apply a topical cream of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid on the area.

  • Shower immediately post a work-out

One of the primary causes of body acne is excessive sweating as the bacteria responsible thrive on sweaty and grimy skin. As such, it is very important to clean off the sweat and remove those clothes as soon as possible to help prevent any bacteria from taking action.

  • Wear breathable clothing

Drawing from the previous point, tight clothing enables sweat to form leading to breakouts. Wear breathable fabric such as cotton to avoid trapping heat and sweat.

  • Eat healthy and drink plenty of water

This one is a no-brainer. Eating a well-balanced nutritious meal while eliminating sugary food as well as dairy will naturally lessen acne. Drinking plenty of water will help flush out the toxins and minimise the bacteria that are responsible for breakouts.

IN-CLINIC

  • Microdermabrasion

A minimally-invasive treatment, microdermabrasion is a great choice for minimising acne breakouts on the body. The technique involves use of an exfoliant with a vacuum that maintains contact with the skin whilst the exfoliant gently buffs away dead-skin cells to renew skin texture, deep cleanse, and treat clogged pores.

  • Chemical Peels

Also known as chemical exfoliation or a “Vi-Peel”, this treatment uses gentle acids or a chemical-based solution to gently resurface the skin by removing the top-damaged layers. The solution ‘peels’ away the dead-skin cells and eventually causes the acne-causing bacteria on the outermost layer of the skin to dissolve, instantly revealing smoother, regenerated skin. This treatment is a minimally-invasive way to visibly improve the appearance of your skin and minimise and virtually prevent body acne.
