Surgical Procedure

Liposuction

Liposuction is a popular and effective minimally invasive procedure that slims contours by removing unwanted excess pockets of fat throughout the body. Because of how powerful it is at safely eliminating fat, it has become the most popular cosmetic surgery, with more than 197,000 procedures performed in 2020, according to a report from The Aesthetic Society.

It can be conducted as a standalone procedure, but it is also often combined with other cosmetic surgeries like breast augmentations or tummy tucks to increase overall improvement to a patient’s contours.

How Does Liposuction Work?

The simplest way to explain liposuction is that a medical professional inserts a cannula into the targeted areas to suction out fat from your body. While this is the general idea for every liposuction procedure, some minor variations can be performed like tumescent, ultrasound-assisted, laser-assisted or power-assisted liposuction.

Each of these techniques focuses on breaking down fat in a more efficient way.

Tumescent liposuction uses a sterile solution injection to swell surrounding fat cells for easier removal. Ultrasound- and laser-assisted liposuction use specialized technology to rupture and liquefy fat cells. Power-assisted liposuction uses a device with a rapid back and forth motion to speed up the removal process.

Liposuction Technique Options

Cutting-edge technology now allows us to use liposuction for much more than just removing fat to create more slender body contours. While patients can choose to undergo liposuction for the primary purpose of eliminating fat, we also offer BodyTite to tighten skin as well as VASER® HD liposuction and BBL liposculpture to construct more sculpted, shapely physiques.

BodyTite

BodyTite offers a minimally invasive form of fat reduction and skin tightening. Radiofrequency (RF) energy from the device liquefies the fat cells in the target area, making them easier to remove through the suction cannula. The RF energy also heats the skin and connective tissue, which results in tighter, smoother skin.

Because BodyTite is a nonsurgical treatment, it offers the benefit of a faster recovery time compared to surgical liposuction procedures.

VASER HD Liposuction

VASER high definition (HD) is a type of ultrasound-assisted liposuction (also known as ultrasonic liposuction) that precisely sculpts the body to create more defined contours. It strategically removes unwanted fat cells from around the muscles and leaves a thin layer of fat over them to enhance muscle definition. After this procedure, areas such as the neck, under the chin (submental area), arms, abdomen, legs and male chest can appear more toned.

VASER is an acronym for vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance. VASER HD liposuction delivers sound waves into the target area to break the bonds between the fat cells and liquefy them, which allows for them to be removed more easily and precisely with the suction cannula. Tumescent fluid is also injected to numb the area, further soften the fat and constrict capillaries to reduce blood loss.

This advanced liposuction technique can target deeper layers of fat cells and remove large or small amounts of fat. The use of ultrasound energy makes fat removal gentler with less trauma to the surrounding tissues, which allows for a faster recovery.

BBL Liposculpture

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) liposculpture involves removing unwanted fat from one area of the body with liposuction and transferring it to the buttocks for increased volume. This technique of butt augmentation with fat transfer (also known as butt fat grafting) can create a larger, rounder and overall more shapely butt.

Patients will need to have enough excess fat to create the desired buttocks volume and shape.

Why Do We Need Liposuction?

There are very few options anyone has when it comes to getting rid of fat. Diet and exercise are the most dominant strategies used, but even those methods have limitations in the amount of improvement they can provide.

Some pockets of fat are stubborn and resistant to both diet and exercise, which leaves many people feeling discouraged about their ability to attain their ideal figure. In these cases, liposuction is one of the only options that can guarantee results.

What Does Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction is a highly versatile treatment that can remove fat in a wide range of areas, such as:

  • Abdomen
  • Waist
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Inner Knee
  • Chest
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Calves
  • Ankles

Liposuction for Men

Men often undergo liposuction to address problem areas. Some of the most common areas of concern include the following:

  • Excess male breast tissue (pseudo gynecomastia)
  • Love handles (hips)
  • Abdomen
  • Neck

How Should I Prepare for Liposuction?

When you begin your liposuction process with Biolite Aesthetic Clinic, the first step is scheduling an initial consultation with one of our expert and highly trained medical professionals. During that consultation, we will conduct a thorough examination, review your medical history and listen to your aesthetic goals.

At that point, our medical professionals will let you know if liposuction is the most effective route to achieve those goals. If it is, then we will work with you to develop a treatment plan. If there is a different procedure that would better suit your goals, we will provide you with plenty of information about the alternatives.

We recommend that you keep a full list of questions with you as you begin researching liposuction treatment. That way, when you come into our office, you can ask all of those questions to our medical staff and have as much information as possible when making your final decision.

There will be some recovery time from liposuction treatment, so we recommend setting up a recovery station with all of the necessities you will need to minimize the amount of strain you are putting on yourself.

You will need to plan ahead to have a trusted friend or family member with you on the morning of your procedure since you will not be able to drive yourself home. It would be helpful to have that person around for the first 24 hours of your recovery to help with small tasks or responsibilities.

Before your surgery, one of our surgeons will give you detailed preoperative instructions. Following these instructions is critical to the safety and efficacy of your procedure, so make sure to review them and ask any questions you may have.

What Should I Expect from a Liposuction Procedure?

There are four steps to a liposuction procedure: anesthesia, incisions, fat removal and wound closure. Patients undergoing BBL liposculpture will have a fifth step that involves transferring the fat to the buttocks.

Anesthesia

The first step in any surgical cosmetic procedure is the administration of anesthesia to ensure your comfort and relaxation. Your options include local anesthesia, intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Your medical professional will talk with you and let you know which is the right option for you during your consultation.

Incisions

Once the anesthesia has taken full effect, your surgeon will make the incisions into the targeted areas of your body. These incisions are tiny since all that is needed is space for a small, hollow tube to enter the fat deposits.

Once the incisions are made, a solution is applied to reduce bleeding from the cut areas.

Fat Removal

This is where the majority of the surgical time is spent. If you are having an assisted liposuction, the surgeon will first perform the appropriate technique to make fat removal easier. Then, they will begin the process of suctioning out fat through a small cannula. For VASER liposuction patients, the doctor will carefully remove fat to sculpt the body.

Wound Closure

Once all of the stubborn pockets of fat have been suctioned out of your body, your surgeon will close the minor wounds created using sutures. You will then be transferred to the recovery room to begin the recovery process.

Fat Transfer (for BBL Liposculpture)

If you choose to undergo Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) liposculpture, the fat removed with liposuction will be purified in a centrifuge to separate the healthy fat cells from blood, oils and damaged fat cells. The strong fat cells will then be carefully injected into the buttocks to add volume and create the desired shape. Some of the fat that is transferred will not survive and will, instead, be naturally eliminated by the body’s metabolism after the procedure. Extra fat is transferred during the procedure to account for this.

Once your procedure is complete, you will be transferred to the recovery room to begin the recovery process.

What Should I Expect During Liposuction Recovery?

When you wake from the anesthesia, you will likely be wrapped in a compression garment and elastic bandages to help mitigate excess fluid build-up (swelling) and push the skin into your new contours.

It is also standard for your surgeon to have placed small drains at the surgical locations to further protect against excess swelling that can cause unnecessary amounts of discomfort. There will be some minor pain and discomfort, but it can usually be addressed through over-the-counter or prescription medications.

During the first week, you should expect to see some significant swelling and bruising in the treated area. These tend to dissipate within the first few weeks. You should be able to notice some results by the three- or four-week mark, but it can take several months for the swelling to subside entirely and the final results to show.

You will be given a full list of instructions to follow during the recovery process. Like the preoperative instructions, following the postoperative instructions can significantly impact your final results.

Recovery From VASER HD Liposuction

The recovery after VASER lipo is generally faster and easier than recovering from traditional liposuction. This is because the fat removal technique is gentler and does not disrupt the surrounding tissues as much as other forms of liposuction. Patients can expect to have less bruising and swelling, and they will likely be able to resume activities and go back to work sooner than if they underwent another type of liposuction.

Recovery From BBL Liposculpture

BBL liposculpture patients will need to take measures to prevent putting pressure on their butt for a few weeks. A donut-shaped pillow or special BBL pillow can be used to sit down so you don’t need to stand continuously or lie on your stomach or side all of the time.

Over the next few months, the grafted fat cells will begin to attach to the blood supply in the area and stabilize. Some of the cells will not be able to re-establish a connection to the blood supply, and they will die and then be naturally eliminated by the body’s purification process.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect From Liposuction?

You can expect to have permanent fat removal in the areas that were treated. Our bodies cannot produce new fat cells, so the areas treated by liposuction will never be able to hold fat to the same degree they used to.

Unfortunately, this does not mean that you won’t gain weight. If you ever become sedentary or have weight fluctuation, your body will store it in different areas than it used to. With that being said, if you are diligent about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, then you can look forward to enjoying your results for the rest of your life.

What Results Can I Expect From VASER HD Liposuction?

After VASER liposuction, patients can expect more slender body contours as well as muscles that appear more defined. Bruising and swelling will camouflage the results for a few months, but the final results of VASER HD liposuction will become visible around six months after the procedure once residual swelling resolves.

Similar to other types of liposuction, the removed fat cells will be permanently gone from the body. The remaining fat cells in the area can increase in size with weight gain, so patients are encouraged to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet to maintain their results.

What Results Can I Expect From BBL Liposculpture?

Patients can expect to have fuller, perkier buttocks after their Brazilian Butt Lift. Once the excess fat has been absorbed by the body, which generally takes up to six months, patients will be able to see the final results of their BBL.

The fat cells that attach to the blood supply will remain permanently in the area. The tissues of the butt will continue to age naturally over time and may develop laxity, but a healthy lifestyle can help preserve tissue elasticity and the shape of the butt.

Can I Combine My Liposuction with Other Procedures?

Liposuction is commonly performed in tandem with other procedures that focus on improving the contours of your body, like breast augmentations, tummy tucks and Mommy Makeovers. We recommend that anyone looking to have multiple procedures performed to do so at the same time to save on recovery time and total cost.

Let your medical professional know during the consultation that you are interested in combining procedures to provide you with information about accompanying procedures.
