This Halloween, we look into the infamous beauty treatment and its benefits
Halloween is upon us, which means it is the perfect time to treat yourself to a luxurious vampire facial. Vampire facials, also known as PRP (platelet-rich plasma), gained traction a few years ago when celebrities like Kim Kardashian West showed the proof of the treatment in her Instagram photos. While it may sound spooky—given that it involves re-injecting your own blood into your skin—experts agree that it is a highly effective way to promote elasticity and collagen production, resulting in rejuvenated skin. The vampire facial is now a go-to treatment globally, given its powerful results.
How does a vampire facial work?
The PRP treatment utilises platelets, a yellow protein-rich element in blood that promotes cell growth and boosts collagen production. Studies show that PRP treatments work on promoting collagen due to the growth factors induced. Because the growth factors target specific areas, vampire facials are effective for scar management and wound healing as well. The procedure has proven results in improving the texture and elasticity, paving way for younger looking skin. According to Healthline.com, PRP treatments may also be used in treating hair loss, osteoarthritis, and tendon injuries.
What is the procedure like?
PRP treatments are non-invasive and use the platelets in your blood to promote cell growth in skin. When you go in for a treatment, your blood will be drawn and depending on the type of treatment, about 10-30 ml of blood will normally be needed. The blood will be put through a centrifuge, which will separate the PRP from other components of the blood. While your skin is cleaned and numbing cream is applied, the filter will process the PRP. Once filtered, the platelet-rich blood will be injected back into your skin using a small needle. For best and long-lasting results, we recommend three treatments at four to six week intervals.
What should one expect after PRP?
Redness, itching, and heat are common symptoms seen after the treatment. You may also experience some bruising. The procedure is non-invasive and these symptoms should settle down in a few days. You must avoid touching your face and ensure you minimise sun exposure during the downtime. Swelling will happen immediately after getting a vampire facial since your skin was pumped with plasma, and it may take a few days to settle. Within three to four weeks, you may notice improvements in your skin in terms of elasticity and texture. It may take up to three months for collagen production. After four to six sessions, the results of PRP can be observed for two years.
Who should get a vampire facial?
Vampire facials may have gained a bad reputation because of assumed risks. The procedure is performed by trained aestheticians and there is little to no risk involved—much less than other cosmetic procedures. Because we use your own blood, there is no risk of allergies and rejection. The effectiveness of the procedure largely depends on your lifestyle factors like smoking and stress, which can affect the quality of your blood. While the treatment is safe, it is not suitable for everyone. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not get a vampire facial. People with blood disorders, undergoing cancer treatment, or those with low immunity are also not suitable. To ensure your safety and wellness, we will take your medical and cosmetic history to determine if the procedure is right for you or not.
Why should you get PRP for Halloween?
Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year. With spooky costumes and heavy makeup, you also want your skin to look and feel the best. The benefits of PRP are scientifically-proven and since the treatment is non-surgical, it can show results for up to two years, and has minimal downtime. It’s the ideal treatment to try for an immediate glow and long-lasting results.
